Our collections of PU rattan garden furniture have been designed to be low maintenance, however, there are some practical steps you can take to ensure that your beautiful garden furniture purchases stay looking as good as they day they arrived for years to come.
Synthetic rattan garden furniture pieces are constructed using powder-coated metal frames, usually Aluminium or Steel. As such, the frames are naturally impervious to corrosion. In addition, the synthetic rattan is made to be fade-resistant, preventing damage from UV rays.
This said, to keep your rattan garden furniture looking fresh and easy to maintain, we recommend regular cleaning with mild soap and a damp cloth or sponge and a pressure washer or hose for heavier dirt, accumulation of leaves in corners or other debris.
Should strands of the rattan loosen into individual strands, these can usually be tucked neatly back in without further remedial work.
To keep your rattan garden furniture items looking their very best we always recommend using a protective outdoor cover when not in use and covering or storing items in a shed or garage when the products are not in use for prolonged periods of time.
Our collections of wooden garden furniture are crafted from natural, solid wood. Whilst they have been treated for outdoor use, natural products still require more care and maintenance than synthetic products and the following steps will help keep them looking fantastic year after year.
When caring for wooden garden furniture products it is important to distinguish between hardwood and softwood products. Whilst both should be treated in the same way, softwood garden furniture products should be cleaned and treated more frequently to be kept looking their best.
Hardwood garden furniture is usually made from Teak, Roble Wood, Cedar, Acacia and Eucalyptus Wood. Hardwood products should at first need little more care than regular cleaning with a mild soap and water, with a cloth or sponge. After time, however, it is a characteristic of natural wood products to change colour, usually with a 'dulling' or darkening, depending on the type of wood used in the construction.
Should you wish to restore a product's original colour there are a wide array of products available on the market to restore and brighten wooden garden furniture. Cuprinol are one of the leading manufacturers of such solutions, offering an array of oils, restorers, cleaning agents and stains.
Roble Wood products are best treated with stains as opposed to oils. Teak responds well to regular oiling, as do Cedar, Acacia and Eucalyptus. To attain the best finish possible when staining or oiling wooden garden furniture usual procedures recommend cleaning thoroughly with soap and water, allowing the product to dry throuroughly and then very lightly sanding the surface with sandpaper before applying the oil or stain/restorer.
As with all our outgoor garden furniture products we always recommend using a protective outdoor furniture cover when items are not in use and covering/storing items in a garage or shed when not in use for prolonged periods of time.
All of our metal garden furniture collections are powder-coated, providing protection from the elements and corrosion. However, these products should be kept covered or, ideally, inside a garage or shed when not in use and regularly and carefully cleaned to avoid leaving damp and dirt on the products, which can, over time lead to the powder-coating becoming worn or cracked.
We offer a wide selection of outdoor furniture covers which we recommend for all metal garden furniture items/sets.
When cleaning metal outdoor furniture it is important to avoid using any form of abrasive cloths or sponges, as these can easily damage the powder-coating, leaving the metal beneath exposed to the elements and potential corrosion. Always use a lint-free cloth or non-abrasive sponge when cleaning your metal garden furniture products.
If the powder-coated finish becomes damaged on any metal garden furniture items, it is recommended that the damaged area is repaired. To do so, any rust or oxidation around the area, along with any cracked paint should be removed using a wire wool or sandpaper, treated with rust-proofing and painted with either a touch-up paint or, where suitable, spray paint. Some spray paints with corrosion-proofing qualities are available in reputable hardware stores and DIY stores.
Aluminium framed garden furniture items will not rust, but may oxidise. Should any areas of the bare Aluminium become exposed, the area should be cleaned using water and a mildly acidic liquid (such as white vinegar), allowed to dry, then treated with rust-proofing and painted as above.
Please note that Garden Furniture House cannot be held liable for any damage or discolouration caused to garden furniture products which may occur when using any of the above methods. These notes are for guidance only and do not represent official instructions. If you are unsure of how to clean or care for your garden furniture products you should consult either with the manufacturer, the supplier of cleaning products or a specialist in rattan/wooden/metal garden furniture before attempting to undertake any remedial actions.
